Book Review: Forever, Interrupted

Forever, Interrupted, by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

This book is not your typical romance. We meet Elsie and Ben, who have been happily married for the past nine days. Ben dashes out to the grocery store to buy Elsie some Fruity Pebbles she was craving, but in the process gets run over by a truck driver; both him and the driver die on the scene, and Elsie is devastated. She now has to cooperate with Ben's mother, who doesn't even know she exists, for the funeral arrangements, all while re-learning to be by herself again, too.

I really liked how this novel switched between the past (early winter of that year) and the present, although at times it was jarring - Elsie would be talking about Ben, who is now dead, and then the next chapter would start off in the past with him very much alive.

The characters in this book jumped off the page, as well, as they were all so normal. Elsie, 26, works as a librarian, and the meet-cute occurs when she goes to get a takeout pizza; she actually wanted delivery but they were quoting her an hour or more wait time, so she goes down to the store to pick it up instead. She and Ben hit it off instantly and they make a "five week rule": they'll date exclusively for five weeks and then see what happens after that. By the end of the five weeks, though, Ben is already itching to move in with her, and Elsie can't think of anything that would make her happier.

Ben's mother, Susan, was also an interesting character - she was very angry at Elsie at first, and standoffish, until they both realize that Susan is only angry at her because Ben is no longer around and Elsie is "the only one left to be angry at."

This may be one of the best books I've read this year, as 2013 comes to a close - it was hard to get through because it was so sad, but I also enjoyed reading about Ben and Elsie's whirlwind romance through the flashbacks, too. The writing itself is also very good, and is in fact better than most of the "usual" romance novels I usually read.

Book Review: Switched

Switched, by Cassie Mae.

So much for having an accomplice on this thing. I'm not sure how I'll do on my own, but he's not getting any more help from me. And there's no one else I can really talk toa bout it because it comes off pretty bitchy. I can't exactly go up and say "Hey! Help me steal my best friend's boyfriend. I promise I have good reasons." Because even though I've convinced myself I do have good reasons, no one gives a rat's ass about it. 

Except Wesley. Damn it. 

I received this book from NetGalley recently and wasn't planning on writing an "official review," but this novel surprised me so much (in a good way) that I now feel compelled to write one. It started off kind of awkwardly but finished nicely, and although you can probably guess the ending just from the synopsis, there were some great scenes within the book to get us there.

Official synopsis:
Ever since high school, Kayla has been crazy for gorgeous football player Talon. But before she could muster the courage to tell him, he became a hot item with her beautiful BFF, Reagan. The only person who knows Kayla’s secret is Wesley, Talon’s best bud—and he’s got it bad for Reagan. Now they’re all in college together, hanging out 24/7. For Kayla, seeing the two lovebirds together is absolutely unbearable. So Kayla and Wesley hatch a plot to drive them apart before Talon has a chance to give Reagan the Christmas gift she’s been waiting for.

Soon enough, the once happy couple is fighting. Reagan suddenly can’t get enough of Wesley’s goofy sense of humor, and Talon seems to be paying more attention to Kayla than a guy who’s “only a friend” ever should. But just when everything seems to be falling into place, Kayla and Wesley accidentally spend a night together and discover a hitch in their plan they never considered: that switching partners may not lead to a perfect ending after all.

This novel had a mini twist at the end that I liked but didn't necessarily see coming. Before that, though, Kayla and her friend Wesley are pining for Talon and Reagan, respectively - THEIR best friends - and Kayla and Wesley hatch a devious plan to break them up.

I loved all the little details in the novel. Wesley works at Yogurtland and always smells like gummy bears (yum!). When Kayla visits his house she thinks to herself that it smells like a dessert palace, that being also like gummy bears and yogurt. You can already tell throughout the novel that even though Kayla is pining over Talon (who names their kid Talon, by the way???), and Wesley wants to end up with Reagan, that Kayla and Wesley would actually be perfect for each other instead.

I also really liked that although they are in the midst of this devious plan, everyone in the novel acts like how teens DO act - as college freshman (18 and 19-year-olds) their actions are appropriate with their behaviors, for the most part, and we can see why Kayla thinks she likes Talon so much; the same goes for Wesley and Reagan.

And this might not be relevant, but even though this book is NA (New Adult - like YA, but with some R-rated scenes), my favorite scene was actually one where Wesley and Kayla were trying to "practice" kissing each other, so that Wesley would be "prepared' to kiss Reagan - it was extremely hot and wasn't even R-rated, for the most part - more like PG-13.

Book Review: White Trash Damaged

White Trash Damaged, by Teresa Mummert.

If someone asked me a few months ago if I would ever have made it out of the trailer park alive, I would have smiled and told them the lie I told myself every day: I will make it out and have a better life for myself. I don't know if I ever honestly believed it, but it was the one thing that kept me from breaking down and giving up on life. Physically, I've left the trailer park and all of the things that were slowly killing me. But it is all still with me.

I stared off at the charcoal remains of my past. The ground was scorched and dead. All of my memories and the horrors that went on inside those four walls eviscerated with a tiny flame that flickered inside of my heart for Tucker.

I had a copy of White Trash Beautiful, the first in this series, from NetGalley, and I finally read it before I read this book, its sequel. It was definitely an interesting story, and I was glad I had White Trash Damaged to delve into right away. Damaged is not quite as good as Beautiful, but it's a good read if you've read Beautiful and want to know more about Cass and Tucker's relationship and where it goes.

Rocker Tucker White saved down-and-out waitress Cass Daniels from everyone in her life who was hurting her—except herself. In the first book, Tucker saved Cass from her life as a waitress diner with a druggie mother and an abusive boyfriend (also a drug addict). In this novel, Cass has to adjust to life on the road with Tucker and his band, and connect with his bandmates and their new manager as well.

I have to say that I did like Beautiful better than this one; there was more going on, although Damaged brings its fair share of conflicts as well. I was going to give this book 4 out of 5 stars, but the ending is a little abrupt - I'm hoping that White Trash Love Song, the next book in the series which focuses on the love life of Eric (another band member), will give us glimpses of Cass and Tucker as well.

I will say that Mummert manages to create convincing people and situations, and I liked that about both books. Definitely read Beautiful before you read this novel, as well, otherwise you will be missing out on a lot of back story, especially Cass's. Tucker continues to be an enigma as we don't receive much information about him, but you could argue that this is mostly Cass's story, as it's written in first-person from her POV, so that might be why he's still a mystery.

Book Review: Beautiful Beginning

Beautiful Beginning, by Christina Lauren.

I glared at him, shaking my head at his attempted guilt trip. "I offered sex. I offered hot, sweaty, floor sex ... You want to fold paper. Who is the buzzkill here?

He picked up a program and studied it, ignoring me. "Frederick Mills," he read aloud, and I began pulling my shirt up and over my head, "together with Elliott and Susan Ryan welcome you to the wedding of their children, Chloe Caroline Mills and Bennett James Ryan."

"Yes, yes, it's so romantic," I whispered. "Come here and touch me."

Beautiful Beginning wraps up the Beautiful Bastard series - see below for my reviews on all of the books in this series - and is a light ending to the characters we have come to know in these novels. There's actually not as much sex in this book as in the others, because Bennett wants to abstain before the wedding, for some reason or another; of course, the chemistry between him and Chloe is still there, and we get quick peeks at the other couples (Max and Sara, and Will and Hanna) too, as they're all attending the wedding.

Back when not being able to stand each other also meant not being able to keep their hands off each other in Beautiful Bastard, neither Bennett nor Chloe could have seen this day coming.

An exasperated bride who just wants to elope. A determined groom whose only focus is getting to the wedding night. And—of course—a whole lot of name calling.

First, the positives. Bennett and Chloe have always had a "unique" relationship - she originally hated him, and he was her boss at an ad agency ... until they started hooking up, and realized that in their case, there was a fine line between hate and love. We see more of this relationship here, and it drives Chloe insane that Bennett wants to abstain from having sex with her before their wedding, as sex is a big part of their relationship.

The characters that Christina Lauren (actually two authors, Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings) have created are fun to read, and I like that they've all made cameos in each other's novels.

I didn't think of this until I read another person's Goodreads review, but I would have liked to know more about the fate of the other couples. Sara was "very pregnant" - so, guessing 7 or 8 months - with Max's child, and Will proposes to Hanna at Chloe and Bennett's rehearsal dinner. So ... what becomes of these two couples? (and what about Chloe and Bennett's honeymoon, as well?) I would have liked more of a defined ending for them, knowing that there's no more books in the series.

This is also definitely not a stand alone book - make sure you read the others in the series and end the series by reading this one.

I'd classify this book as "chick lit" although it has many layers to it too. The novel goes back and forth between present-day, when Katherine and Laney don't speak anymore, at first, to the past, when Katherine and her father moved to Manchester and she and Laney instantly became best friends. When Katherine went by Kitty, she was friends with Luella Hancock, an elderly lady who lived in the mansion located between Katherine and Laney's houses, and Luella always had them over to her house to swim. Now Luella has passed away, and she's left her house to both Katherine and Laney, with the stipulation that they must clean up the house and sell her belongings together; if they don't, neither of them sees a penny from the sale.

It was interesting how Kitty and Laney were best friends at one point in their lives, and present-day were estranged from each other. The book illustrates how this happens - the "master plan" was for them both to go to UVM for college, but then Luella encouraged Kitty to apply to NYU; Kitty was accepted and never had time to visit UVM between school and her job, even though she was dating Laney's brother. Things spiraled out of control from there, and Laney became pregnant at 22, so her future in Manchester was sealed at that point.

I liked that the author chose to go back and forth between the late '80s/early '90s and present-day, as the reader gets to learn exactly what caused the rift between the two women. However, I will say that although I liked the ending, it wrapped up a little too neatly for my taste - no spoilers here, but everyone gets what they want, for the most part, which I suppose is par for the course for some types of books. The characters are easy to relate to, though, and the story is a compelling one.
