A lump forms in my throat. A person needs to be a solid judge of character in my job. I'm an excellent judge of character. I sense that Alex is a genuine person, and that my target did something monumental for her.
"Sure, okay," I lie. I'm not here to ease her conscience or to take care of Luke.
I'm here to do the exact opposite.
And for the first time, that makes me ill.
Which tells me that I've broken one of the most basic rules of undercover work: don't get emotionally attached to your targets.
I was excited to get the chance to review this book, because it's the follow-up novel to Burying Water, which I reviewed last September. She's also the author of the Ten Tiny Breaths series, which I've also reviewed, and which I highly recommend. Becoming Rain has a few cameos from the Burying Water characters, too, and exists on the same timeline, thereabouts.
About BECOMING RAIN:
Luke Boone doesn't know exactly what his uncle Rust is involved in but he wants in on it—the cars, the money, the women. And it looks like he's finally getting his wish. When Rust hands him the managerial keys to the garage, they come with a second set—one that opens up the door to tons of cash and opportunity. Though it's not exactly legal, Luke's never been one to worry about that sort of thing. Especially when it puts him behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 and onto the radar of a gorgeous socialite named Rain.
Clara Bertelli is at the top of her game—at only twenty-six years old, she's one of the most successful undercover officers in the Washington, DC, major crime unit, and she's just been handed a case that could catapult her career and expose one of the West coast's most notorious car theft rings. But, in order to do it, she'll need to go deep undercover as Rain Martines. Her target? The twenty-four-year-old nephew of a key player who appears ready to follow in his uncle's footsteps.
As Clara drifts deeper into the luxurious lifestyle of Rain, and further into the arms of her very attractive and charming target, the lines between right and wrong start to blur, making her wonder if she'll be able to leave it all behind. Or if she'll even want to.
K.A. Tucker is very good at what she does, and this book was no exception. I enjoyed the brief flashes of Jesse and Alex (from Burying Water) as well, as Luke used to be roommates with Jesse and is still close with him. I could see the ending of this novel happening from a mile away, but it was still satisfying to see how things wrapped up and how it got to that point.
It was also funny to see how Clara (aka Rain, her undercover name) enjoyed her undercover lifestyle more than her own D.C. one - because she's supposed to be a rich socialite (with money from her father), she drives an Audi and lives in a luxury condo; all to attract Luke's attention, so she can get close to him and find out what illegal operations he and the garage employees are involved in.
Overall I probably liked Burying Water a teeny bit more than this installment, but this story was very interesting as well, and definitely held my attention.
